Episode 14 – Charles Paul – Artwork for Education

This week’s guest is Charles Paul. The Worldwise Education CEO is a former high-school teacher who left the ranks of education for a career in corporate finance. Mr. Paul was Managing Director of mergers and acquisitions for two prominent investment banking firms in Southern California and served as the CEO of his own merger and acquisition firm that he sold in 2001. Nearly $1 billion exchanged hands as a result of his closed transactions.
Together with his wife, Katherine Pham-Paul and Edgar Crocker, Charles co-founded Worldwise Education to demonstrate that a for-profit business can generate shareholder value and simultaneously benefit a social cause — in this case, provide teachers with educational materials needed for their classrooms at low cost or free of charge.

First off – 5000 listeners per episode? That’s amazing to hear, congrats guys!
Now…fund raisers. I was so glad this year to learn my girls would *not* be hawking wrapping paper or popcorn tins at their new school. In fact, they’re doing something similar to this, with an NC-based (ie-local) company but like Mr. Paul said it is only available for the parents. They were very proud to tell me I’ll be able to buy coffee mugs and keychains with their artwork on it.
Mr. Paul has certainly found a good niche that should be full of eager purchasers, and all for a good cause.
WorldwiseEducation.comArtworkForEducation.comVivian, So glad your girls are doing a healthy fundraiser. We get so excited at the WE offices when artwork comes in and we get to see what the kids created. They always blow us away by their creative spirits. We encourage kids to think outside the box to come up with something new. No matter what they’re learning, it’s important for them to think creatively, whether it’s to answer the algebra problem, visualize chemical bonds or build vocabulary.
As you heard, what sets our company apart is our relationship with retail partners, such as Whole Foods. Not only can parents purchase their child’s artwork, but anyone who just happens to be looking for a unique card for a birthday, get well, special occasion… Through each card, not only are we connected to the kids, but also their schools and community.
Thanks again to all the listeners of MIPTalk! We’re grateful to be a part of your community as well!
